Pollok 2 – 2 Troon – West of Scotland Premier Division – 30th September 2023

Matchday nine of the West of Scotland Premier Division saw Pollok play host to a Troon side who have had a mixed start to the season so far. There was one change from the side who dismantled Penicuik in the Scottish Cup – with Calum Gow unavailable he was replaced in the heart of the defence by Matty Burrows.

With the home side on a great run of form they started with confidence and were ahead inside the first minute. Forde picked up a header from McGregor in the middle of the park and played a beautifully weighted pass out to Gallacher. His low cross cross found the unmarked McKenzie at the back post and he applied a composed finish to a great move for his fifth of the season.

Troon carved out a great opening in the twelfth minute when a long ball was worked out to the right-hand side and when the cross came in it found Shankland in space but he headed wide. Pollok responded with a long ball of their own from the resultant goal kick. Forde showed exceptional skill to control Longmuir’s kick whilst on the ground and from there burrowed his was way into the box before shooting straight at the keeper.

Both teams had long range efforts – Burns shooting over after a good move down the right resulted in a switch of play and Troon shooting straight at Longmuir. The next significant attack saw Troon equalise in the twenty-first minute. Having tried to build from the back they were pressed into a hopeful ball forward. Forrester was deceived by the bounce of the ball as he was pressurised by Shankland who got in behind and finished expertly.

Pollok continued to press forward at every opportunity and more good hold up play by Forde created a crossing chance for Mullen. His swirling cross found McGregor who headed over under pressure.

Troon’s tactic of leaving three players up front whilst defending corners very nearly paid dividends on the half hour mark. A clearance found Shankland who played it in behind for Black. With the opportunity to shoot he decided to try and square it for Gallagher but this allowed Burrows the chance to make a brilliant interception. Black got in again minutes later but couldn’t quite set himself before screwing a shot over the bar.

On the stroke of half-time McKenzie expertly controlled a long ball and had a go from twenty-five yards but it went wide. The teams went in all square at the break.

HALF-TIME: POLLOK 1 – 1 TROON

Pollok started the second half – shooting down the hill – on the front foot. Forde passed to Gallacher who displayed some lovely skills to make room for Burns. His low cross was dangerous but well defended. Christie then curled in a cross which McKenzie looped towards goal. Fisher got a hand to it before gathering.

Pollok then won a series of corners with a Mcgregor effort stopped on the line and a Forrester header deflected over the bar as they looked to regain the lead.

Forde once again picked the ball up in midfield before firing a pass to Gallacher who controlled it and beat his man with an absolutely sublime piece of skill. He then worked his way into the box before seeing his well-struck shot saved by Fisher.

With twenty minutes to go Troon sprung a quick counterattack and Gilroy got in behind. His fierce shot was parried away by Longmuir and Forrester just got a toe to the rebound to prevent any further danger.

A minute later Pollok regained the lead. An attack seemed to be fizzling out as Burrows challenged for the ball and forced it forward to Forde. His touch took him infield and when the ball sat up for him he unleashed a left-foot screamer into the top corner. A goal of the highest quality that we have come to expect from the in-form forward.

The home side then went in search of the goal that would secure the three points. Forde headed a Christie cross against the bar then after a good move down the right a Mullen cross once again found Forde’s head. This time Fisher made a point blank save.

Troon still looked dangerous and as the game went into injury time the Pollok defence were under pressure. A pass out of defence found Anderson who unfortunately slipped, which allowed Troon to switch the play. The ball was then headed into the box and Lok’s old nemesis Shankland was there to find the bottom corner with a low volley on the turn.

Pollok had their chances to secure the three points but Troon will feel they merited a draw in a game which offered plenty of entertainment. Forde’s goal may well have deserved to be a match winner but may yet have the consolation of being goal of the season.

So a brilliant September for the Southsiders ended with a late disappointment, but the unbeaten run now rolls into October – a month which will see another run of cup fixtures with the next league contest not scheduled until the second Saturday in November. The big fixtures keep on coming.

Post-match interview with Stewart Maxwell:

Pollok v Troon: Match Report

After the Scottish National team gave the country a boost with two Hampden victories, football on the south side of Glasgow continued with Troon visiting Newlandsfield for match day twenty seven of the West of Scotland Premiership.

Pollok manager, Stewart Maxwell, made two changes to the team narrowly beaten by Darvel the previous Friday. Sean Burns and Kenny Barr dropped out to be replaced by Craig Menzies and Adam Forde. Fraser Mullen also switched from right to left back.

Unusually Pollok were kicking up the slope in the first half but it did not take them long to get going in an attacking sense. A free kick on the left was superbly whipped in by Mullen and Rumsby was on hand to bundle the ball home from a couple of yards with only two minutes on the clock.

Scott Rumsby wheels away in celebration.

Docherty then burst down the right and fired over a low cross. Forde tried to leave it to Buchanan but seemed to distract him and he fired over from a good position.

If the home support thought they were in for a comfortable afternoon that notion was quickly eradicated. Another Pollok corner in the fourth minute saw a Buchanan pass intercepted and Troon’s policy of leaving three players up the park reap dividends. Josh Black played a beautiful pass through the middle to namesake Ben who applied a dinked finish over the onrushing Longmuir.

Pollok resumed their attacks and Mullen fired a great ball out to Christie in the seventh minute to switch the play. Christie jinked past his fullback and delivered a dangerous cross that was well defended.

Troon then took the lead. There seemed little trouble as Longmuir comfortably clutched a header into the box. In looking to distribute quickly he rolled the ball out to Lyon who was facing his own goal. Lyon realised he was being pressurised and passed the ball back to Longmuir. In looking to clear long he didn’t connect as well as he would have liked and hit the ball straight into Josh Black. As Black moved in on goal Brownlie got in a great tackle but the ball was still loose and Black just beat Longmuir to it before turning and rolling it into the empty net.

Del Esplin tries to rally the Pollok squad after squandering their early lead.

Troon held on to the lead for slightly longer than Pollok had done but it was two all after twenty-two minutes. Another superb switch of play by Mullen found Christie on the run. He chested it past a defender and burst into the box to apply a classy finish into the bottom corner.

Pollok then went in search of a third goal with some enterprising attacking play. Brownlie, Docherty – after tireless harassing of the Troon defence – Esplin and Forde all having efforts on goal but all missing the target.

After those missed chances the home side found themselves behind again in the thirty–sixth minute. A dangerous free kick in from the left saw Buchanan tug Jamieson and the referee pointed to the spot. Longmuir got a hand to Wilson’s penalty but it was well–struck and accurate as it found the corner of the net.

After a speculative long-range volley from Forde, Pollok almost equalised with the last action of a pulsating first half. A Mullen free-kick from the right was headed goal–wards by Rumsby but it clipped the top of the bar.

Half Time: Pollok 2 – 3 Troon

The home side maintained their attacking intent at the start of the second half. After a corner was only partially cleared Lyon headed a pass out to Mullen who flicked on to Christie. His cross found Forde unmarked and he thumped home a ferocious volley to make it three apiece with forty eight minutes on the clock.

A thumping volley from Adam Forde draws Pollok level.

Troon then had two golden chances in the space of two minutes to regain the lead. First Josh Black saw a shot well blocked but the rebound fell perfectly for him but his shot took a nick off a defender on its’ way over the bar. From the corner the ball was partially cleared but eventually it was swung back in with the Pollok defence looking for offside. The assistant referee’s flag remained steadfastly at his side and Wilson was left with a gilt-edged chance which he skied over the bar.

Pollok regained the lead in the sixty-fourth minute. With the ball bobbling about the midfield Menzies produced a back heel which may have been meant for Esplin but found Forde. He played a superb reverse pass to his strike partner Docherty who finished with aplomb in off the far post.

Both teams continued to attack with Troon seeing a glancing header from a corner whistle just over and then Forde had a thunderous strike from twenty-five yards go inches wide with Burgess rooted to the spot. Christie then found Burgess’ midriff with a shot after an exquisite one two with Forde. Burgess was beaten in Pollok’s next dangerous attack after Forde fired Gary McCann’s cutback goal–wards but his effort was cleared off the line.

Substitute Gary McCann looks to test the Troon defence.

With Pollok only one ahead Troon continued to believe and pushed men forward at every opportunity but the Pollok rear-guard were playing better than in the first half. With a couple of minutes to go a quick throw by Longmuir found Christie. He drove down the field before flicking a pass into Barr whose shot was tipped round the post.

After Menzies had a word with his refereeing namesake about the time he was adding on the referee seemed reluctant to blow his whistle and allowed play to continue. Pollok were therefore able to launch one last attack and after Barr found Forde with a lobbed pass his cross found Stuart McCann who headed home from six yards out.

Stuart McCann makes sure of the points with a close range header.

Eight different players had found the net in a pulsating encounter which had seen an abundance of attacking threat. Perhaps not a game either defence will remember with great fondness but a merited three points for the home side in the end. And no-one will have left the ground bemoaning a lack of entertainment.

Sponsor’s Man of the Match: Adam Forde

The Pollok forward was at the heart of much of Pollok’s attacking play and his goal early in the second half got the comeback started. Also chipped in with two assists in a decisive performance.

A guide to season 2018-19

The dust has only just settled on last season but we’re already looking ahead with the players due to report back to pre-season training this Saturday. We’ve got some friendly fixtures lined up later in July but before that we just wanted to go through a bit of housekeeping with several changes happening in the structure of our league and cup competitions in the coming season.

Expanded premier division

You’ll no doubt be aware after this was passed at last years West Region AGM, but this season the Premier Division has gone from 12 teams to 16. We’ve lost Arthurlie and Girvan but First Division champions Petershill move up along with Largs Thistle, Renfrew, Cambuslang Rangers, Troon and Irvine Meadow XI. The league is now called the Premiership with the Championship, League 1 and League 2 sitting below that.

This season the league kicks off on August 4th?with a trip to newly promoted Renfrew. We then welcome Largs to Newlandsfield before a trip to the seaside to play Troon. Check out our fixtures page for the first half of the season’s fixtures..

NEW SECTIONAL CUP FORMAT

The Sectional Cup has been revamped for season 2018/19 bringing together the Central and Ayrshire sections into one competition. All West region teams have been split into groups of 8 teams, bar one which has 7 teams. The teams within that group of 8 were then drawn into two mini groups of 4. (Still with us?) This group of 4 is our section for the next two seasons. In the third season, the same original group of 8 will be redrawn into two fresh groups of 4.

Our main sectional group contains; Clydebank, Maryhill, Rossvale, Shettleston, Vale of Clyde, Vale of Leven and Yoker.

For season 2018/19 and 2019/20 we have been drawn in a group containing;

Maryhill

Rossvale

Shettleston

These sectional group fixtures will take place over one week at the beginning of the season on the 28th July, 30th July and 1st August (Sat, Mon, Wed). We play Maryhill at home on Saturday 28th, Shettleston away on Monday 30th and are at home to Rossvale on Wednesday the 1st of August.

The winner of our section and the winner from the other mini section in our group will then meet in the second round of the competition.

Other competition NEWS…

The Scottish Junior Cup will kick off on September 15th, with the second round scheduled 2 weeks later on September 29th.

The West of Scotland Cup will continue and Pollok have been drawn to play away at Ardrossan Winton Rovers. This match is currently scheduled for November 10th.

The Central League Cup will not go ahead this season.

The end-of-season Evening Times Cup will now be contested the following season.
