We were saddened to hear of the death of our former full back Tony Connell, who passed away on Hogmany at the age of eighty.

Tony signed from Queen of the South in 1973, and played his last two seasons at Newlandsfield before retiring in 1975 and spending a year as a member of our coaching team. In the photo above, he is pictured third from the right before a 4-2 win at home to Arthurlie on 25th August 1973. Tony found the net for Pollok on three occasions.

Born in Govan, Tony began his career at junior club Strathclyde before moving to Third Lanark in 1963. He signed for St Mirren in 1967 and his contribution over four seasons at Love Street was enough to see him enter their Hall of Fame in 2007. He lifted the Scottish Division Two title in his first season and was voted the club’s player of the season for 1969-70.

Tony’s funeral will take place on Monday 20th January at 10 o’clock in St Gabriel’s Church followed by the Hurlet Crematorium at 11 o’clock.
