Rutherglen Glencairn 1-3 Pollok
Sectional League Cup - Quarter Final
The Celsius Park, Wednesday 24th August 2016
Pollok advanced to a semi-final tie with Kirkintilloch Rob Roy after a 3-1 win over Rutherglen Glencairn at the latter named’s Celsius Stadium.
The first sighter of the game came via Pollok skipper Paul Gallacher, heading Carlo Monti’s corner over JC Hutchison’s crossbar.
‘Lok opened the scoring in the 12th minute, an inch perfect cross from the outside of Davie Winters right boot was met by the head of Monti at the back post who, without breaking stride, made no mistake.
Glencairn responded, Fraser Team’s flag kick headed over by Jordan Marshall, before Craig McGregor’s turn and shot in the area was deflected wide. A triumvirate of chances was completed when Sean McGuire glanced a header wide from 6 yards out.
The visitors went back on the offensive, a Winters 20-yarder sailing over, while Hutchison showed good positioning to deny Tam Hanlon from a free-kick, and Del Hepburn from a back-post header.
Pollok custodian Jordan Longmuir was called into action, palming away after Team had waltzed through the defence, the ‘keeper springing back up to deny Del McNab’s follow-up with his legs.
Stewart Hall was short with a header back to Hutchison allowing Hepburn to pounce, the home rearguard recovering well to clear off the goalline.
The homesters restored parity in the 42nd minute, a great piece of ball control by Jay McKay on the touchline gave him the space to send McNab on his way towards goal, his finish with the outside of his boot into the top right hand corner of the net was exquisite.
Terms were only level for 100 seconds, Hepburn laid off for Findlay Frye to unleash past Hutchison into the top right hand corner from 20 yards.
Glencairn had a golden opportunity to equalise with the first chance of note in the second period, McNab’s shot broke to Team at the back post, who scooped the ball over the bar with the goal at his mercy.
The hosts were made to rue this miss in the 62nd minute, Longmuir’s goal-kick bounced over the home defence where Winters was on hand to sweep a first time effort into the bottom corner.
McKay created space for himself, wriggling free from the shackles of the Pollok defence, his bouncer going wide, while at the other end Michael Daly saw his shot squeezed of the post by some dogged home defending.
A nice move involving Hepburn and McCann set up Daly, Hutchison spreading himself to deny the ‘Lok man.
Glens closed out the game with two final chances, Alan Muir sending a free-kick just past the upright, before Team’s quick break saw him bring out a smart save from Longmuir.
