Pollok 9 (Nine) - 0 St Anthony's
Sectional League Cup - Group Stage
Newlandsfield Park, Wednesday 10th August 2016
A saturated Newlandsfield Park saw St. Anthony’s unable to stem the tide of the homesters, Pollok swashbuckling their way to a 9-0 victory in this Sectional League Cup group match.
It was the Ants’ Ryan Smith who had the first sighter of the game, dragging a shot wide of the upright from 20 yards before Pollok took a 3rd minute lead. A corner was cleared to the edge of the area where Mark Sideserf’s attempt was turned home by Ross McCabe from 6 yards.
The advantage was doubled three minutes later, Gary McCann surged through the visiting defence to finish low into the bottom corner.
A nice passing move created ‘Lok’s next opportunity, McCann’s ball to Davie Winters was cut back to Carlo Monti, who passed the ball wide of the target.
Craig Smith was next to threaten for the Ants with a shot which sailed over the bar from the edge of the area before Pollok began to dominate, initially with McCann teeing up Winters, his shot deflected over by Aiden Lennon.
Sideserf and McCann both had efforts which failed to trouble St. Anthony’s custodian Jon Connolly before a third goal was added in the 42nd minute. An exquisite ball down the channel by Monti found McCann, his ball across the corridor of uncertainty was put through his own net by the unfortunate Michael McDowall, who injured himself in the process and had to be replaced by Paul O’Brien.
A cavalier move brought about goal number four in the 47th minute, Winters finishing off another McCann cross.
‘Lok went nap when Winters netted his brace 82 seconds later, Pollok’s trialist full-back’s cross-cum-shot found the striker handily placed to notch.
The half-dozen arrived in the 57th minute, Monti’s through-ball saw Del Hepburn spring the offside trap to round Connolly and score.
Sideserf made it a magnificent seven when he waltzed through the visitors’ rearguard before chipping over the advancing Connolly.
The night went from bad to worse for the Ants in the 68th minute, Thomas Miller’s challenge on Findlay Frye deemed worthy of a straight red card by arbiter Chris Gentles.
Michael Daly linked up with Winters to allow the latter a chance to stake a claim on the match ball, the outside of the goal-frame denying him.
McCann followed Winters example by adding his name to the two-goal club in the 83rd minute, Hepburn cut inside to force a save from Connolly who could only parry into McCann’s path, and he made no mistake.
Connolly was called into action again shortly afterwards to deny Allan MacKenzie, and then use his legs to keep Daly out.
When the ninth goal came though, there was little the shot-stopper could do about it, Sideserf laying off to MacKenzie, his effort taking a deflection on its way into the goal.
