Pollok 5-1 Neilston Juniors

Sectional League Cup - Group Stage

Newlandsfield Park, Wednesday 17th August 2016

Pollok moved closer to a quarter final berth in the Sectional League Cup after a 5-1 win over Neilston at Newlandsfield Park.

The game was only 16 seconds old when ‘Lok came close to opening their account, Del Hepburn sliced a volley which looped onto the top of the crossbar.

Neilston’s first sighter came via Danny Stoney, who was on hand to guide a Derek Kennedy cut back goalwards, the outstretched leg of home custodian Jordan Longmuir coming to his sides rescue.

Tam Hanlon broke the deadlock in the 8th minute for the homesters, curling a free-kick into the postage stamp corner after Gary McCann’s surging run had been brought to a halt by Euan Clark.

Parity was restored eight minutes later, a deep Kieran McDade free-kick causing the home rearguard to get themselves in a fankle, Robert Storrie on hand to head the ball into the empty net.

The Farmers Boys had an opportunity to take the lead when a free-kick was cleared to Martin McLachlan, who dragged wide from 20 yards.

The home side went in at half-time with the advantage thanks to 38th minute strike. Hanlon received the ball just inside the right hand touchline, and from fully 30 yards unleashed an unstoppable rocket across the goal and into the top corner.

Straight from kick-off in the second half the visitors looked to get back on level terms, Stoney running through the spine of the ‘Lok team before firing straight down Longmuir’s throat.

Hepburn and Colin Williamson retaliated for Pollok with efforts which failed to trouble Ian Nixon in the visiting goal, before Neilston had their best chance of the half, Stoney showing tremendous pace to beat Chris Walker, his shot cannoning off the bar to safety.

The Farmers Boys were made to rue this miss in the 61st minute, Hepburn’s low cross from the bye-line was met by McCann, his side-footer rebounding off the upright to Carlo Monti, who showed composure to pick his spot and open his account for the season.

A nightmare three minutes for Neilston followed, Clark picking up his second booking of the evening for a clip on Allan MacKenzie preceded Hanlon completing his hat-trick from the resultant 35 yard free-kick.

Hanlon’s set-piece prowess was causing problems for the opposing defence, a free-kick from wide setting up MacKenzie to divert a diving header off target, then a straight shot which was comfortably taken by Nixon.

The scoring was completed in the 76th minute, Monti’s shot was flicked on by MacKenzie into the path of Paul Young, who was unfortunate to divert the ball into his own net.

A Monti shot from a MacKenzie lay off was gathered by Nixon, and the goalmouth action was completed when McCann pulled a grounder wide from distance.
