Pollok 1-0 Irvine Meadow

New Coin West of Scotland Cup - 2nd Round

Newlandsfield Park, Shawlands - 11 February 2017

Pollok secured safe passage into the draw for the last 16 of the West of Scotland Cup by the narrowest of margins, defeating Irvine Meadow XI 1-0 at Newlandsfield Park.

‘Lok had a lucky escape in the opening exchanges, a short passback giving Graham Boyd a run on goal, home custodian Jordan Longmuir alert to clear the danger.

Pollok’s first sighter came when Gary McCann’s cut-back from the bye-line was met in his stride by Michael Daly, Shaun Newman in the ‘Dow goal equal to the task to tip the ball out for a corner.

A deep free-kick from the visitors was cleared by the home rearguard only as far as 20 yards out where Ryan Begley was on hand to test Longmuir, the ‘Lok man beating the ball to safety.

Set pieces played an important role in the home sides next two goalscoring opportunities, Liam Rowan’s corner finding Chris Walker at the back post, before Daly had a similar chance, both with the head, both being saved by Newman.

The only goal of the game came in the 26th minute, Davie Winters cross picked out the unmarked Del Hepburn at the back post, who had time to control before rifling under Newman.

Another poor defensive moment gave Meadow a chance to restore parity, Graham Muir latching onto a weak header, his attempt to beat Longmuir with a chip dropping over the bar.

The final goalmouth action of the half started with Tam Hanlon’s ball down the channel finding McCann who again teed up Daly, his first-timer dragging wide of the target.

Pollok had the first shot on goal in the second period, Rowan being put through on the overlap, Newman’s legs keeping the score at 1-0.

The homesters were reduced to 10 men in the 56th minute, Daly being sent for an early bath by arbiter Stephen Brown after an off-the-ball altercation with Begley.

Medda looked to make their numerical superiority pay, initially from a Ben Black snapshot which went over, secondly from a Ben Carson free-kick which Longmuir pushed around the upright.

‘Lok counter-attacked from the resultant flag kick, ending with McCann’s shot being gathered by Newman at the second attempt.

Andy Cripps header from a Carson delivery was held in a pincer movement by Longmuir’s legs, while at the other end Rowan launched a free-kick over the bar.

The last two chances of the match both fell to the visitors’ Jared Willet in stoppage time, the first a half-volley straight down Longmuir’s throat before he unleashed from the corner of the area, cannoning off the bar to the relief of those of a Pollok persuasion.
