Pollok 4-0 Cumnock Juniors

West Super Premier League - MATCHDAY 8

Newlandsfield Park, Saturday 5th November 2016

Pollok displayed some fireworks in front of goal in the last quarter of an hour to triumph 4-0 over Cumnock in this Guy Fawkes day clash at Newlandsfield Park.

The first half hour was something of a damp squib, the only chance of note a defensive slip allowing ‘Nock striker Sean McKenzie a sight of goal, but he failed to find the target.

The game was sparked into life with Pollok’s first real attack resulting in the opening goal, the ball bobbling around in the visiting area and Davie Winters spinning like a catherine wheel to hook an overhead kick in off the upright,

Cumnock responded, McKenzie fired over from 25 yards then turned creator, setting up Raymond Montgomerie, alas his effort was somewhat powder-puff.

A Gary McCann bouncer from 20 yards was off target for the home side before two low Scott Anson drives kept ‘Lok custodian Jordan Longmuir alert.

Stephen McKenna’s shot from distance over the postage stamp junction was the final action as the first half fizzled out.

‘Lok had the first sighter of the second period, the ball breaking to Kieran McAleenan who could only sidefoot past the upright.

Paul Burns’ dipping volley was tipped around the post by Longmuir, while at the other end Allan MacKenzie looped a header from a Tam Hanlon free-kick over the crossbar.

Liam Rowan was next to threaten for Pollok when he burst through the visiting rearguard, failing to trouble Darren Johnston.

Longmuir was given another opportunity to demonstrate his agility when he was at full stretch to claw a Callum McRobbie free-kick away.

This was the visitors’ best chance to restore parity as the homesters doubled their lead in the 74th minute. Determined play from McCann got him into a position to play a reverse pass into the path of Del Hepburn to sweep home.

Cumnock’s last threat to the Pollok goalmouth came via a Burns free-kick that dropped narrowly over the bar, before the home side closed out with a bang.

Rowan was on hand to bear down on Johnston after a sclaffed clearance attempt by Andy Muir, the midfielder showed great composure to beat the advancing goalkeeper.

Johnston came out on top in their next duel when he palmed Rowan’s free-kick out for a corner. The resultant corner led to the final goal of the afternoon, Michael Daly’s header rebounded off the underside of the crossbar, but when the ball came back into the area, Chris Walker was on hand to net from close range.
