Pollok 2-0 Arthurlie
West Super Premier League - MATCHDAY 6
Saturday 8th October 2016, Newlandsfield Park, Glasgow
A 1,000+ crowd was on hand to witness Pollok run out 2-0 winners over Arthurlie in the Southside Clasico at Newlandsfield Park.
The visitors had two good sighters in the early exchanges, Gary Smith‘s ball to Darren Gribben‘s feet seeing the latter hit wide from an angle, while a Jordan Leyden effort from distance had ‘Lok goalkeeper Jordan Longmuir scrambling as the ball crept past the post.
These chances sandwiched the home side’s opening strike, Davie Winters’ half-volley from a Gary McCann chest down going wide of target, ahead of Winters’ free-kick over the bar being his team’s next opportunity.
Smith‘s free-kick went straight down Longmuir’s throat, before Pollok finished the half strongly, Winters’ back-post header from an Allan MacKenzie cross going over.
‘Lie custodian Grant Hay was called into action twice before the interval to keep the scoresheet blank, strong play from MacKenzie saw him get a shot away which was easily collected, then Liam Rowan’s pass with the outside of the boot saw McCann denied by the ‘keeper’s legs.
The opening action of the second period brought about the opening goal, the visiting rearguard failing to pick up Rowan’s run from midfield, allowing him to get on the end of Grant Evans’ long throw-in and foozle Hay.
Hay then denied Winters twice to give his side hope of restoring parity, Gribben failing to take the initiative when he cut onto his left foot and fired over.
The homesters punished this miss in the 61st minute with a sweeping move that began on the edge of their own penalty area, and ended with McCann’s cross being unselfishly laid off by Winters into the path of Kieran McAleenan to sidefoot home.
McAleenan had the ‘Lok’s next two chances, squeezing wide from a tight angle after MacKenzie had played him through, and then a free-kick which allowed Hay to demonstrate his agility.
Arthurlie responded, Smith‘s header from a Mark Blakey cross looping over, the same player’s daisy-cutter soon after failing to cause Longmuir much concern.
A Rowan free-kick straight at Hay and a Ryan Deas half-volley gathered by Longmuir closed out the goalmouth action for the afternoon.
