The Legends 2012

The fifth annual Legends match between ex-players from Pollok and Arthurlie will take place on Sunday, September 9th at Newlandsfield Park, Shawlands, kicking off at 3pm.

The legends game was born out of a love for football and the chance to see some of the greatest players in Pollok and Arthurlie’s recent history strut their stuff one more time. The initial response to the idea to stage the game was such that it was decided to make it a charity event that would be held every two years for the Eric Hickey Charity Shield, named in honor of a much loved Barrhead businessman who had recently passed away.

After the first game the players decided that two years was too long to wait, so the match is now player annually. The teams are made up of ex-players of both clubs who are over 35 and played for the respective clubs for two years. There are also a number of guest players who have enjoyed the match over the last four years including Gus McPherson, Tommy Sheridan, Jim Murphy, as well as supporters of both sides.

Pollok currently hold the upper hand in an always fiercely contested fixture. After losing 4-3 in 2008, then drawing 4-4 the following year, they have won the last two matches 3-2, then 3-1 last year, a game in which experienced ex-senior referee Kenny Clark was shocked at the commitment, in what he expected to be an old crocks’ kickabout.

John Rowbotham has agreed to take charge this year, a fantastic gesture from the ex-grade one official who will travel from the east coast to officiate on the day.

Every year we select four charities and any monies raised are equally divided between them. Neither club receives a penny from the event, and both Pollok and Arthurlie have been fantastic from day one in granting free use of their facilities.

This year’s charities are, PDRU _Physical Disability Rehabilitation Unit, Southern General Hospital, Glasgow. Action for ME, Yorkhill Hospital, and Nordoff-Robins.

The game takes place on Sunday September 9th, @ Newlandsfield Park, Shawlands, kick off 3pm. Full details can be found on
