Willie Irvine: Bankies, Blasties and Beyond

On Saturday we welcome Kirkintilloch Rob Roy to Newlandsfield. They’ve made a great start to the season with a brand new squad, notching up three wins and a draw. Their manager has brought in a few great players as well. I’m sure the Rabs are going to give us a hard game, but you know, every Super League game is hard, and we’re going to be focusing hard on getting our own performance right.
The last few weeks have seen mixed fortunes for us. In the match against Clydebank a couple of weeks ago, I have to be honest and say I thought it was a good performance. We started the match really well and we definitely looked a good side in the first 45 minutes. The boys were affected by the controversial circumstances surrounding Jordan’s sending off early on in the second half. We should have done better after the red card, and we lost goals that, ordinarily, I don’t think we would have. The most disappointing thing is that having played so well, we didn’t get anything at all out of the game.
In spite of the 4-2 score, I’m not convinced that the performance against Kilbirnie last week was one of our best. Granted, we won comfortably, but it could have been more comfortable. We had a lot of opportunities, especially in the first half, to really kill the game off. We’re always happy to get three points in any Super League match, and Kilbirnie has always been a tough place to go and win. They kept at it for 90 minutes, and credit to them, they made I tough for us in spite of the scoreline. It was great to see Kinney getting a goal on his debut. He looked really confident all the way through the game, and it’s always great to get that first goal for your new team. He’s not totally match fit yet, but I expect he’ll get a few chances to get up to speed in the coming weeks.
I’d like to have taken more points from the first four league games, and with a bit more luck in the matches against Beith and Clydebank, I think we might have. I think supporters have seen that we’ve got a better, stronger, more competitive team this year, in all departments. The determination is there in the players; they’re working hard and spirit in the camp is strong. I still believe we’re going to be competing strongly this season.

As always, we need the supporters to get right behind the team on Saturday, so please, come out in your numbers to cheer the boys on!
