Willie Irvine: We Badly Want Three Points on Saturday

I have to say, I was disappointed with the result against Saint Anthony’s on Wednesday night. We found ourselves up against a team that didn’t really want to play football, and constantly tried to stop us from playing our game. My players brought their game down a level and it ended up a messy affair, a real battle. It was poor, a real zero game.  Normally we like to get the ball and knock it about and that just didn’t happen for us. Inexperience in defence cost us silly goals. It’s really difficult to take away anything constructive from the result, because we were so poor—not in terms of effort, because the effort was good—but it was our level of performance that was poor. We just didn’t pass the ball, and that’s what we always work on.

All of that said, it’s in the past now. The slate is wiped clean. The only thing we’re concentrating on now is making a good start in the league against Beith on Saturday. They provided some really tough opposition for us last season, but make no mistake, we badly want all three points from this game. We’re determined to put right last season’s wrongs.

I’m likely to have most of my players available for the game on Saturday. We took Swift off as a precaution on Wednesday, but I’m confident that he’ll make it. I’m also hopeful that Peter McMahon will be fit for the game too, but we’re ready to deal with it if he’s not.

What I ask of you, the fans, is to get right behind the team on Saturday, as you do week in, week out. That will give us a huge boost as we aim to get our league campaign off to the best possible start!
