Kirkintilloch Rob Roy 2-0 Pollok

Sectional League Cup - Semi Final

Guys Meadow Stadium, Wednesday 31st August 2016

Kirkintilloch Rob Roy set up a Sectional League Cup Final date with Shettleston after a convincing 2-0 victory over Pollok at Guys Meadow Stadium.

Gary McMenamin had the Rabs’ first sighter of the game when he dispossessed Colin Williamson in the midfield, his audacious lob curling just wide.

‘Lok responded, Davie Winters creating a brace of chances, initially laying off to Findlay Frye, before a front post cross to Carlo Monti. Neither of these failed to trouble home custodian Michael McKinven.

Chris Duff was next up for the MacGregors, lashing over form 20 yards, while Craig Buchanan came even closer, his header from a Gavin Mackie corner clipping the top of the Pollok crossbar.

Monti cracked a first time effort well over, and at the other end Willie Sawyers sent a bouncing header from a Mackie flag-kick past the post.

Mackie’s set-pieces were causing concern, his free-kick causing Jordan Longmuir to make a diving save low at his right hand post, the ‘Lok goalkeeper up quickly to block Daniel McKenzie’s follow up.

The Roy would not be denied a half-time lead though, Duff’s ball into the feet of Sawyers was well held up allowing him to complete the one-two with his strike partner, who gleefully crashed the ball past Longmuir from six yards.

The opening exchanges of the second period saw the best opportunity fall to Sawyers when he looped a header over from a Scott Walker cross.

The homesters doubled their advantage in the 57th minute, Lee Gallacher rolling the ball to Sawyers with his back to goal, who was then able to turn and fire past Longmuir, the ball clipping the inside of the post en route to nestling in the back of the net.

The upright was more favourable to Pollok when Gallacher cut inside at the edge of the area, his shot hitting the goal frame and going wide.

The last two chances of note for the Roy were both from distance, Duff and McMenamin trying their luck, neither drive concerning Longmuir.

The visitors only effort on goal came in the dying embers of the game, a deep Del Hepburn cross was met by a powerful Gary McCann volley, McKinven beating the ball away for a corner.
