Arthurlie 1-1 Pollok

Sectional League Cup - Group Stage

Dunterlie Park, Saturday 20th August 2016

Pollok ensured they would qualify from their Sectional League Cup group unbeaten after returning from Arthurlie’s Dunterlie Park with a 1-1 draw.

The homesters had the first sighter of the match, Darren Gribben off target from 25 yards.

Ryan Deas almost put Arthurlie ahead when he charged down Jordan Longmuir as the ‘Lok goalkeeper attempted to clear a backpass, the ball spinning over the crossbar.

A Mark Blakey cross found David Morrison at the edge of the six-yard box, his diving header was straight at Longmuir.

The last ‘Lie chance of note in the opening 45 came when Deas shot over from 20 yards.

Pollok took the lead in the 37th minute, Tam Hanlon’s free-kick from deep was controlled by Mark Sideserf at the corner of the penalty area. He cut inside onto his right foot to unleash an unstoppable drive into the postage stamp corner.

The half was completed when Longmuir’s kick-out landed at the feet of Gary McCann in behind the home rearguard, his cross-cum-shot along the corridor of uncertainty was fingertipped safe by home custodian Grant Hay.

Arthurlie restored parity with the opening attack of the second period, Deas drifiting through the 'Lok defence before he too picked out the postage stamp corner with the outside of his right boot.

They almost took the lead shortly after when Gribben’s free-kick from 30 yards had Longmuir scrambling as the ball passed the upright.

'Lok’s first chance of the half came after Sideserf’s throw-in allowed Carlo Monti to roll his defender, ultimately lashing his shot over the bar.

The visitors were presented with a golden opportunity to regain the advantage with quarter of an hour remaining, Gavin Rushford adjudged to have impeded Davie Winters in the penalty area at the cost of a second yellow card and a penalty to Pollok. Fortunately for Rushford, Hay guessed correctly to keep out Winters’ spot kick.

Despite their numerical disadvantage it was Arthurlie who were next to threaten, Gribben controlling brilliantly at the edge of the area, his shot, though, was straight down Longmuir’s throat.

Pollok closed the game strongly with two stoppage time chances, Del Hepburn’s poke goalwards was cleared off the line, while Michael Daly headed over from close range.
