Pollok 1-0 Cambuslang Rangers

EuroScot Engineering Central League Cup

Pollok ensured their name would be in the hat for the quarter-final draw of the Central League Cup after a 1-0 win over Cambuslang Rangers at Newlandsfield Park.

Robbie Winters had the first sighter of the game for the homesters, firing over from a Carlo Monti lay-off, before Liam Rowan showed clever footwork in the box to force a save from ‘Gers goalkeeper Ian Stewart.

The visitors first shot on goal came via ex-’Lok midfielder Ryan MacBeth creating space for himself before hitting straight down Jordan Longmuir’s throat.

The home side went back on the offensive, Ross McCabe’s header from a Tam Hanlon corner was cleared off the line ahead of Findlay Frye having a 25-yarder clutched by Stewart.

Pollok’s last chance of the half was an Allan MacKenzie volley from a Robbie Winters cross which was deflected wide, while the ‘Lang’s closer was dragged past the post by Jamie MacLeod.

Cambuslang’s Nicky Moore was first up in the second half, sclaffing off target, while Frye put over for ‘Lok after finding space at the edge of the area from a short corner.

Moore turned creator for his side with a through ball to Robert Davidson who was denied by a smart save from Longmuir.

A similar chance at the other end saw MacKenzie put through Steven Higgins, Stewart making the block and Neil Newman completing the clearance.

Stewart kept the score blank moments later when Hanlon’s cross to back post saw him save point blank from a Monti header.

The last ten minutes saw Pollok on top, substitute Kieran McAleenan’s hit was beaten away by Stewart, before some good work from Monti and Davie Winters set up Kevin Bradley who failed to make the connection with the goal gaping.

When Chris Walker’s header clipped the top of the crossbar, many of a ‘Lok persuasion thought it wasn’t going to be their night, and the game would be heading to penalties.

In the 89th minute, however, those thoughts were put to bed by Frye, who won the ball in the centre circle, played a one-two with Davie Winters which sent him bursting through the visitors’ rearguard, where he kept his cool to round Stewart and roll the ball home.

Monti and Davie Winters had chances to double the lead in stoppage time, neither forcing Stewart to work.
