Pollok 3-1 Yoker Athletic
Scottish Junior Cup
Newlandsfield Park, Saturday 24th October 2015
Pollok ensured their name entered the hat for the third round draw of the Scottish Junior Cup after a 3-1 victory over Yoker Athletic at Newlandsfield Park.
The first half was a rather turgid affair, which the home side had the better of, Chris Walker’s nod down to Davie Winters setting the striker up for an effort which was blocked by the Yoker defence.
A route one goal-kick from Jordan Longmuir was headed into Davie Winters path by a visiting defender, goalkeeper Liam Campbell palming the striker’s shot wide.
Tam Hanlon’s corner kick set up Pollok’s next opportunity, Robbie Winters flashing a header wide of target.
The scoring was opened in the 20th minute after referee Calum Scott adjudged that Robbie Winters had been impeded in the Whe Ho penalty area, Hanlon netting the resulting spot-kick with aplomb.
The home side looked to extend their advantage with several intricate passing moves in and around the visitors’ box, Robbie Winters and John Sweeney failing to trouble Campbell with their shots, but Mark McLennan forced the 'keeper into action, getting his fingertips to the full-back’s well placed try.
It wasn’t until the early exchanges of the second half that Yoker had their first chances of note, David Crerand’s turn and shot from 25 yards sailing over the crossbar, before the same player sprung the offside trap, Longmuir coming out on top on this occasion.
Pollok punished the visitors for these misses in the 63rd minute, Sweeney’s corner to the back post being headed back into the danger zone by Paul Gallacher where Robbie Winters was on hand to nod home from 6 yards.
Hanlon’s delivery was proving creative for Pollok, Del Hepburn finding the side-netting before Davie Winters headed over from point blank range.
Yoker reduced the deficit in the 77th minute, after Campbell fisted away a Sweeney free-kick setting his side on a counter-attacking move, Crerand again beating the offside trap and coolly slotting underneath Longmuir.
The visitors’ chances of restoring parity were dealt a blow in the 83rd minute when player-manager Steven Reilly was ordered to the pavilion by arbiter Scott after receiving his second booking in as many minutes.
‘Lok made this numerical advantage count two minutes later when Robbie Winters swivelled and crossed deep into the area where Walker was there to meet the ball with a diving header and give Campbell no chance.
The Whe Ho had the final scoring opportunity of the match in the second additional minute. With the home rearguard claiming that the ball had went out of play, Crerand played to the whistle, advancing to the bye-line where he cut back to substitute Gary Arbuckle, who was denied by the legs of Longmuir.
