Irvine Meadow v Pollok
West of Scotland Cup 10th October 2015
Meadow Park, 10/10/15
Pollok’s interest in the West of Scotland Cup ended at the first hurdle as they succumbed to a 1-0 defeat at Irvine Meadow XI.
The home side started brightly, Chris Hall dragging a shot wide with less than 10 seconds on the clock.
Ryan Deas free kick was met by the head of Marc Twaddle, who failed to find the target before Meadow made the early pressure count in the 11th minute. Hall’s through ball found Gary McCann in behind the ‘Lok defence, and he slotted the ball under Jordan Longmuir to give Meadow the lead.
The visitors first chance came after a searching crossfield pass from John Sweeney found Robbie Winters on the left wing, the former Scotland International picking out his brother Davie in the box, his shot being padded away by Meadow goalkeeper Graeme Shepherd.
Another Deas set piece picked out Twaddle unmarked, his header going wide, before Deas himself had a shot when the ball broke to him after some pinball in the Pollok area, sclaffing the ball off target.
The final chance of the half came Pollok’s way, Kieran McAleenan’s free kick from the right wing drifting wide of the upright.
‘Lok had the better of the opening exchanges in the second period, a Robbie Winters turn and shot being an easy take for Shepherd, before Sweeney unleashed from outside the box, stinging the Meadow custodian’s hands.
Shaun Fraser had the homesters first sighter of the half, slashing wide.
The 62nd minute saw Pollok come close to restoring parity after Meadow’s failure to clear their lines at a corner saw the ball land at the feet of Davie Winters who cracked his shot off the post.
Ex-Meadow full-back Mark McLennan tried his luck from distance, his effort deflecting over Shepherd’s crossbar.
Fraser had another attempt for the home side, being denied by a block from 'Lok centre-half Chris Walker, while Stuart McCann turned in the area, but could only find the side netting of Longmuir’s goal.
Determined play by 'Lok new bow Steven Higgins saw him fashion a chance for himself from 20 yards, Shepherd dealing with it without too much concern.
The fourth additional minute gave Meadow the opportunity to put the result beyond doubt when Robert Halliday’s clearance sent Fraser bearing down on Longmuir, the home man blazing over.
'Lok’s last effort came when Sweeney spotted Shepherd off his line, and attempted an audacious lob which dipped just over the bar.
