Petershill 1-5 Pollok

McBookie Super League Premier Division

Pollok put in a five-star performance to climb to the summit of the Premier Division table, defeating city rivals Petershill 5-1 at Petershill Park.

The home side had the better of the opening exchanges, a Chris Craig corner getting ‘Lok goalkeeper Jordan Longmuir into a fankle, Jordan Chisholm heading goalwards where Kieran McAleenan was on hand to clear off the line.

Kieran Daw was next up for Peasy, dragging his first-timer wide of the upright.

Pollok took the lead in the 11th minute, John Sweeney whipping a corner kick in from the left which took a touch off the head of the homesters’ Kieran McAnespie on it’s way past custodian Stevie McNeil.

Peasy responded when Craig made a burst from midfield, his effort ultimately failing to trouble Longmuir.

‘Lok doubled their lead in the 29th minute, McAleenan sending in a free-kick from the halfway line, finding Chris Walker in the penalty area who nodded into the path of Davie Winters, the striker firing under McNeil from close range.

Petershill pulled a goal back with their next attack, Scott Davidson was allowed time and space to bring the ball down 25 yards out and fire in a low shot which seemed to foozle Longmuir on it’s way into the bottom corner.

An excellent touch from Davie Winters set himself up for the visitors next opportunity, turning and volleying over.

McNeil denied Sweeney when he palmed the ‘Lok midfielder’s free-kick over the crossbar, but Sweeney would secure his brace in the 44th minute when the ball sat up invitingly for him to loop a half-volley over the Peasy 'keeper.

Pollok made it four with their first attack of the second half, McAleenan’s cross from the left finding it’s way to the unmarked Davie Winters at the back post, the merest of touches enough to divert it home. The far-side assistant had his flag raised, but after a conflab with referee Craig Napier, the goal was allowed to stand.

'Lok saved the best until last when they went nap in the 66th minute. When a Petershill free-kick was cleared to Sweeney, and he released the ball to Tam Hanlon in the middle of the Pollok half, it would take three more touches without leaving the turf before ending up in the home goal. Hanlon’s ball up the wing to Allan MacKenzie was cut across to Davie Winters at the back post to finish off a sweeping counter-attack.

A speculative volley from the corner of the penalty area by Chris Malone was the only real chance Peasy had at this juncture, Longmuir holding comfortably.

Sweeney continued to trouble the home rearguard as he went in search of his hat-trick goal, getting on the end of a nice move from the Winters brothers to curl a left-footer narrowly wide.

A golden opportunity presented itself when Chisholm clumsily bundled over ‘Lok substitute Mark Sideserf in the area in the 82nd minute, McNeil saving Sweeney’s penalty with his legs.

The game closed out with two attempts by Davie Winters to add to his treble, initially springing the offside trap to go one-on-one with McNeil, the onrushing goalkeeper coming out on top. Attempt two saw brother Robbie beat the trap enticing McNeil into a headed clearance which fell to Davie’s feet, his ambitious lob bouncing just past the upright.
