Bonnyrigg Rose 0-5 Pollok
ETHX Energy Scottish Junior Cup
New Dundas PARK, SATURDAY 13TH February 2016
A scintillating display from Pollok saw them advance to the quarter final draw of the Scottish Junior Cup after a 5-0 win over East Region table toppers Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic at the latter named’s New Dundas Park.
Overnight weather conditions, as well as a lunchtime flurry of snow, meant that a Herculean effort was required by all concerned at Bonnyrigg and they duly obliged, referee Steven Reid eventually saying “Game on” with less than 30 minutes to go until the advertised kick off time.
The first sighter of the game came through Pollok full-back Tam Hanlon, who sent a free-kick over the bar.
The ‘Lok opened their account in the 15th minute, Kevin Bradley sending in a deep ball to the back post where Davie Winters had peeled off his marker to head across Rose goalkeeper Michael Andrews, and into the back of the net.
The homesters responded when an Adam Nelson free-kick from out wide was met by Kieran McGachie, his header flashing wide.
Alan Horne cut inside from the right to have a pop from 25 yards, dragging his left foot shot wide of ‘Lok custodian Jordan Longmuir’s post.
Both 'keepers were given a chance to show what they could do before the half ended, Davie Winters laying off to Allan MacKenzie, Andrews parrying his shot wide, while at the other end a Nelson corner picked out Lewis Turner at the back post, Longmuir’s fingertips keeping his header out.

Perhaps unsurprisingly the home side started the second period brightly as they looked to restore parity, a ball over the top of the visiting rearguard saw Wayne McIntosh bear down on Longmuir, who made himself big to block.
Dean Hoskins was next to try his luck for the Rose, but lost his footing as he pulled the trigger.
Carlo Monti had two good chances to extend his side’s lead, a deflected volley creeping just past the post, while a corner routine straight from the training ground saw him blaze over.
Monti was involved when the lead was doubled in the 60th minute, his free-kick was spilled by Andrews into the path of Paul Gallacher, the 'Lok skipper lashing home from close range.
When the advantage was extended further still three minutes later, Monti was again the creator, the ball breaking to him after a scramble at the edge of the Pollok area. The forward charged forward, carrying the ball half the length of the field, and intelligently waiting on Davie Winters finding space behind the Rose defence before slipping the ball through for his strike partner to notch his brace.
Bonnyrigg continued to press, Turner setting McIntosh away, the striker once again thwarted by Longmuir.
The 70th minute saw the arrival of the visitors’ fourth goal, and what a strike it was! Monti’s corner to the penalty spot was met by Chris Walker, who running away from goal and facing the wrong way, managed to hook an unsaveable volley into the postage stamp corner.
Despite the game looking beyond them at this point, the home side continued to push forward, McGachie’s cross to substitute Ross Drummond’s head forced Longmuir to the claw the ball away at his front post, and keep his clean sheet unmuddied.
Pollok went nap in the 81st minute, Robbie Winters running from deep to beat the offside rule and head for a one-on-one confrontation with Andrews. The Rose man did well to halt the ex-Scotland man’s progress, but was unfortunate that the ball landed straight at Winters’ feet, where he showed great awareness to square to fellow substitute Del Hepburn, who made no mistake.
The final effort of the game came via a Kevin Bradley cross-cum-shot which clipped the top of the Bonnyrigg goal frame.
