Kirkintilloch Rob Roy 3-2 Pollok

West Premier Super League

MATCHDAY 16

Guy's Meadow, SATURDAY 5TH March 2016

Kirkintilloch Rob Roy reduced the deficit on league leaders Pollok with a 3-2 win at their temporary home of Guy’s Meadow.

‘Lok had the first sighter of the game, Carlo Monti chesting the ball into the path of Davie Winters who volleyed over.

The visiting rearguard were having difficulties dealing with the Lee Gallacher's corner kicks in the early exchanges, and it was from one such delivery that the MacGregors took the lead. The defence failed to clear their lines as the ball bobbled around the box, Kevin Watt’s volley on the turn beating Pollok goalkeeper Jordan Longmuir.

Despite two early injury enforced substitutions, Rob Roy had the better of the opening 45 minutes, a cross from Watt was headed over at the back post by Reece Pearson, while Chris Duff slashed high and wide from distance.

They had a good chance to double the lead when, after a surging break on the counter-attack from Duff, the ball broke to Gallacher, the Pollok defence recovering sufficiently to block the danger.

The visitors’ ranks were depleted in the 42nd minute after a petulant scything tackle on Duff by Monti resulted in arbiter Craig Napier inviting the Pollok man to take the order of the march.

Even with the numerical disadvantage, parity was restored in the 53rd minute with the first purposeful attack of the second period. Davie Winters cut the ball back from the bye-line to Tam Hanlon, his drive across the corridor of uncertainty was tucked away by Mark Sideserf from close range.

Terms were level for only six minutes as the Rabs went ahead after Gallacher rolled a quick free-kick to Willie Sawyers, the prolific marksman showed strength to turn in the box and fire a low shot into the left hand corner of the net.

Pollok responded, Ross McCabe’s long ball was nodded down by Allan MacKenzie to Davie Winters, his chip landing on top of the home netting.

Matters were levelled once more in the 65th minute, Findlay Frye beat Jonathan Carter to the ball, and was caught by the Kirky skipper in the area. Davie Winters sent Jordan Brown the wrong way with the resultant penalty.

Rob Roy pushed forward, a Watt grounder failing to test Longmuir before Gallacher’s free-kick dipped just over the crossbar.

Steven Aitken did test Longmuir though, forcing the ‘Lok custodian into making a smart save, before the MacGregors scored what proved to be the winner in the 88th minute. Once more it was a Gallacher corner that proved to be the Pollok undoing, David Barr rising to bullet home a header.

The final chance of an entertaining second half came the way of Pollok debutant Liam Rowan, who fizzed in a shot from the corner of the penalty area, Brown showing agility to palm the ball wide of the upright.
